The mayor of the Spanish city of Badalona resigned on Wednesday after he was found breaking the lockdown rules, drunk driving and resisting arrest on Tuesday night.

The Catalan police force confirmed that Alex Pastor had been arrested in the center of the city in northeast Spain.

When stopped by the police, Pastor refused to take a breathalyzer test to see if he had been drinking, then resisted arrest, before being taken to the Les Corts police station in Barcelona.

He was still in custody when he announced his resignation on Wednesday morning in a letter.
