So far Palm Pre has been enjoying video-less existence much like the iPhone in its toddling years. And again, much like on the iPhone, the Palm Pre's first try in video recording is via an unofficial third-party application.

Palm Pre is now capable of capturing 480x320 pixels video at some fine 30 fps in H.264/AVC format and the clips see really good. The Pre's hardware is otherwise perfectly capable of recording good-bitrate video as it uses the same hardware platform as in Samsung Omnia HD, Apple iPhone 3GS and Nokia N900.

We are sure the Pre users were eager to acquire a capturing camera update with some of the recent Operating System (OS) updates, but the latest WebOS 1.3.1 did not bring anything on the capturing camera app. To create up for that the team behind the Precorder took the initiative to create excited all off the Palm Pre owners.

The Precorder app

With the Precorder installed on your Palm Pre you will be able to capture 480x320 pixel videos at 30 fps. It supports MPEG-4, H.263, and H.264/AVC formats and can even turn the Light Emitting Diode (LED) on for low-light scenes. The videos themselves see promising. You can watch a sample shot with a Palm Pre camera.

The Precorder is in alpha version so it might be buggy or even crash from time to time, but at least the guys are working on it. You can find the installation instructions here.
