Cartons of seized frozen Turkey by Nigeria Customs Service

The Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has destroyed seized frozen poultry products valued at N4m.

A statement by the Controller of the command, Mr. Ndalati Mohammed, said the seizures were made at the border areas including footpaths.

He said the smugglers were trying to evade import duty by bringing in prohibited items through unapproved routes.

Garba said, “Full compliance with this directive had resulted in various seizures and arrests, the most recent being the impounded frozen turkey and chicken, which falls under import prohibition.

“While some of the suspected smugglers escaped into the bush at night during the operation, our operatives arrested one of them and also seized a vehicle being used as a means of conveying the prohibited items.

“Today, we are destroying these poultry products in compliance with the government directives and wish to use this opportunity to warn smugglers to desist from crime and engage in lawful jobs.”

Garba promised the command would arrest those behind the crime and bring them to book.

In an attempt to dissuade members of the border and business communities from smuggling, he said persuasion was being used as a tactic alongside enforcement.

He said, “The persuasion strategy is paying off as our duty collection is appreciating because more people are complying. We have often assisted agents and importers through proper enlightenment.

“Our enforcement is round the clock and we shall continue to improve on our ‘no compromise position’ while ensuring that compliant traders and importers or agents enjoy the best of customs trade facilitation.”
