Without much fanfare Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S5 mini. It grew slightly compared to its predecessor with a 4.5" screen, keeping within the reasonable limits of "mini". The specs aren't particularly high-discontinue though it retains the tradeimprint features of the gigantic Galaxy S5.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is built around a 4.5" Super AMOrganic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) classy screen of 720p resolution. It measures 131.1 x 64.8 x 9.1 and weighs 120g, compared to 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm and 107g of the Galaxy S4 mini. The fine news is that the pixel density went from 256ppi to 326ppi.

The body is IP67 certified meaning it is completely dust tight and can be submerged under up to a meter of water for half an hour. Interestingly there's no flap covering the microUniversal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 port on the bottom, Samsung has managed to create it water resistant with some sort of special coating.

The back is perforated leather and features a heart rate monitor, while the hardware Home key on the front doubles as a fingerprint reader.

The processing power hasn’t gone up significantly - the Galaxy S5 mini packs four Cortex-A7 cores @ 1.4GHz, while Random-Access Memory (RAM) remains at 1.5GB. The internal storage was doubled to 16GB (there's a microSD card slot if that's not enough).

The Galaxy S5 mini will come out with Android 4.4 KitKat and feature S Health, Private mode, Kids mode and Ultra Power Saving mode. The battery power went up a bit to 2,100mAh. The connectivity was bumped up to 150Mbps LTE and keeps the IR blaster on top.

The capturing camera department remains unchanged at 8MP stills and 1080p @ 30fps video. The capturing camera features the Shot & more and Virtual Tour modes from the gigantic Galaxy S5 as well as the S Studio editor.

Four color options for the Galaxy S5 mini

The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini will start its rollout in Russia early this month in four color options: Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but there's a dual-SIM version inbound.
