Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, has ordered the immediate payment of over N890 million as scholarship to indigenes of the state studying in higher institutions of learning in Nigeria and abroad.

This is contained in a statement signed by Malam Imam Imam the governor’s spokesman and issued to newsmen on Monday in Sokoto.

The statement said the order was in fulfillment of the governor’s promise to ensure that indigenes of the state receive the best education and to uplift the standard of education in the state.

“Already, approval had been granted for the payment of over N387, 000 for students studying in Europe, America, Asia and some African countries.

“A verification committee had also been set up to ascertain the number of students studying in the four continents mentioned above and the institutions they are attending,” it said

The statement said the government had also set aside over N503.5 million for payment of Sokoto state indigenes studying in institutions of higher learning across Nigeria.

It added that verification to determine the number of beneficiaries of the scholarship in schools across Nigeria would be undertaken.

“This is with a view to capture them in the new bio-metric data system after which payment will be made,” it said.

The statement reiterated the determination of the government to ensure adequate and prompt payment of allowances and other entitlements to its students.

It quoted Tambuwal as urging the officials in charge of the payment to ensure that the exercise was undertaken in a transparent manner.

The statement urged the students to reciprocate government’s gesture by dedicating themselves to their studies and ensure that government investment on them was not wasted.
