Google's Standalone VR Headset Project Has Been Shut Down

According to a recent report from Recode, the standalone VR headset project at Google has been scrapped. If you recall, the Wall Street Journal had reported earlier this year that the Mountain View, California-based company is working on a VR headset that doesn't rely on a smartphone, PC, or a gaming console to function.

As for the reason, the Recode report says that Google has had a change of plans, and is now focusing heavily on mobile VR. For those who aren't in the know, the search giant unveiled Daydream VR platform at this year's I/O conference. While Daydream is Android-based, the standalone headset - the report says - would have been powered by a brand recent operating system.

Shutting down of the project shouldn't really come as a surprise given that it was part of Google's parent Alphabet's experimental X lab, which has - in past - seen many of its initiatives being scrapped for one reason or the other.
